Principle of Ni-MH rechargeable battery

Some metals have a strong ability to capture hydrogen. Under certain temperature and pressure conditions, these metals can absorb a large amount of hydrogen and react to form metal hydrides, while releasing heat. Thereafter, when these metal hydrides are heated, they decompose and release the hydrogen stored in them. These metals that "absorb" hydrogen are called hydrogen storage alloys.
The hydrogen storage capacity of hydrogen storage alloys is very strong. The density of hydrogen storage per unit volume is 1000 times that of gaseous hydrogen at the same temperature and pressure, which is equivalent to 1000 atmospheric high pressure hydrogen storage.
