Overcharging of rechargeable batteries

During the charging process, the voltage of the battery will gradually increase with the increase of the storage capacity. When the storage capacity of the battery reaches the saturated electrode material, the electrolyte will be electrolyzed and oxygen will be produced in the anode and the cathode will be produced when the storage capacity of the battery reaches the saturated electrode material.

Hydrogen generation will cause internal pressure rise in sealed batteries and damage the internal structure of batteries. Such a phenomenon is called overcharging.
In order to avoid damage of overcharged batteries, the capacity of cathode is usually made larger than that of anode. When overcharged, the anode will first reach saturation and produce oxygen, while the cathode will not produce hydrogen. The oxygen generated by the anode will react with the metal cadmium produced by charging to absorb oxygen, and the reaction speed will be related to the production of metal cadmium. Balanced speed can effectively avoid the pressure rise of the battery. But if the charging current is too high (when using fast charging), it will lose balance. Over-voltage of the battery will push the safety valve of the battery open. Hydrogen and oxygen will leak out of the battery until the pressure decreases and the safety valve closes the battery before sealing again. But the leakage of gas has reduced the internal chemical material. The battery life is shortened.
